On July 14, 1930, Melvin Lamar Mitchell Sr. was the fifth child born to the late Hugh Mitchell Sr. and Emma Mitchell in Luthersville, Georgia. Melvin transitioned peacefully early on the morning of March 28, 2019 at West Georgia Hospice, Lagrange Georgia. He joined Red Oak Grove Baptist Church at an early age where he faithfully served as Chairman of the Deacons for over forty-six years. On January 13, 1952 he married his love Lola Kate Clayton Mitchell who preceded him in death on August 2, 2000. To this union, seven children were born.

Melvin retired from Delta Airlines after twenty years of service. After retirement, he became employed with Meriwether County Schools for fourteen years, touching each life he encountered in a special way. He never met a stranger and always found a way to make the people around him laugh. He loved the Atlanta Braves, fast cars, and always had a hat to match his fashionable clothing. It did not matter what the situation was, Melvin never complained and always kept his faith. His motto was “If you ain’t got him, you better get him!”

Melvin was preceded in death by William Mitchell, grandson Dwayne Louder, and great grandson Damarcius Robinson. His siblings: Annie Mitchell, Luvonya Towns, Dorothy Mitchell, Grace Simpson, and Rev. William E. Mitchell also preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish, six loving and devoted children: Martha Bridges, Jimmy Mitchell, Shirley Louder, Robert Mitchell (Vanessa), Emma Jean Hawkins, and Melvin Mitchell Jr.; 9 grandchildren: Stephanie, DeAdrienne (Claude), Marco (Kimberly), Eric, Renae, Eugene, Camille (Dwight), Chaquita, and Ashley. Melvin leaves behind his siblings: Martha, Sallie, Mary, Ruby (Joe), and Hugh Jr (Carolyn). Melvin also leaves behind 25 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, a special friend Lizzie Dozier, a special cousin Pete Brown, a devoted niece Lois Mitchell, and many other nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.
