Maggie Norris, the daughter of the late Virgil Norris and
the late Hattie Gooden Norris, was born on July 18, 1923, in
Meriwether County, Georgia. On March 16, 2025, at the
blessed age of 102, she entered eternal rest, leaving
behind a legacy of love, faith, and service to her family
and community.
Maggie was raised on Alvaton Road in Meriwether
County, in a home filled with strong values, hard work,
and deep faith. She was one of three children and was
preceded in death by her brother, Bennie Lee Norris, and
her sister, Rosie Lee Godfrey. From a young age, Maggie
worked alongside her parents on their family farm,
learning early on the importance of dedication, humility,
and helping others.
Later in life, Maggie worked as a babysitter in DeKalb
County before settling in Atlanta, where she lived and
worked for thirty-one years. She also spent time in
Washington, D.C., with her aunt, but she always felt drawn
back home to the warmth and familiar comfort of
Georgia.
Maggie’s love for people and her giving heart were well
known throughout the community. She was often seen
giving rides to those who didn’t have transportation—
whether it was to church on Sunday morning, a doctor’s
visit, or errands around town. If someone needed a way
to get somewhere, they could count on Maggie. She was
a blessing to many, always willing to lend a helping hand.
She was a lifelong and active member of Shiloh Baptist
Church in Alvaton, where she found great joy in
worshipping, singing in the choir, and fellowshipping with
her church family. She was a quiet example of grace and
compassion, touching lives through her gentle spirit and
warm heart.
Maggie cherished spending time with her family and
friends and found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She
enjoyed peaceful Sunday drives, tending to her garden,
and baking homemade treats for her loved ones. In her
younger years, she also took pride in sewing. Whether she
was sharing stories on the front porch or lending a
helping hand, Maggie’s gentle spirit and kindness were a
source of comfort and joy to all who knew her.
Maggie often said the secret to a long life was to "work
hard and treat people right." Those who knew her would
say she did exactly that. In honor of her 100th birthday, the
Meriwether County Board of Commissioners issued a
proclamation recognizing her many contributions to the
community.
Maggie leaves to cherish her memory of her loving son,
Paul Norris, along with a host of extended family, dear
friends, neighbors, and her church family, each one
blessed by her love, wisdom, and generous spirit.
Sewell Mortuary is honored to be entrusted with providing end-of-life services to the family of Maggie Samuels.
