Surrounded by the grace of lilies and the brightness of yellow roses, we gather to celebrate the beautiful life of Mattie Reese Jackson, a woman whose kindness, strength, and gentle spirit touched every life she encountered. She was affectionately known as “Bootchie” by her siblings, cousins, and friends. Her great nieces and nephews knew her as “Boots”. Everyone else simply called her Mattie or Mrs. Jackson.
Mattie was born October 4, 1941, in Meriwether County, Georgia to the late Sam Ector Reese and Annie Lillian Reese. She was the first born beloved daughter of nine children. Mattie grew up rooted in faith, family, and the values of hard work and compassion.
Mattie began her education in the Meriwether County School System. After graduating from Greenville Consolidated High School, she continued her studies at Fort Valley State College. There, she earned her degree with a Bachelors degree in Home Economics with emphasis in Science in May of 1965. Her dedication to learning and service shaped the foundation of her life’s work and the love she poured into her family. Mattie’s teaching career spanned from Heard County in 1965 to Meriwether County, where she retired in 1997. During that time, she educated students in both the elementary and high school levels. She was instrumental in piloting the first Pre-K program in Meriwether County and was well known for luncheons for the Greenville Kiwanis Club.
On March 25, 1967 Mattie married the love of life, Rufus Jackson. Their union was blessed with three children– two sons and one daughter, who became the center of her world. Mattie’s home was always filled with warmth, good food, laughter, and the steady rhythm of a mother’s love.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing, shopping, soap operas, and tending to (burning leavers) her yard. She found joy in creating beauty and comfort for those she loved. Mattie’s hands were rarely still, and everything she touched carried her signature care.
Mattie loved God and showed it through her fellowship at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church, where she joined at a very young age. After marriage, she served Rocky Mount Bethel Baptist Church with her husband, until becoming devoted members of Total Fatih Missionary Church of God where she worshipped faithfully until her health declined. Her faith was quiet, but unwavering. It reflected in the way she lived with humility, gratitude, and grace.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories, her children: Anthony( Dacia) Jackson, Angie (Cedric) Henry, and Allen Jackson; grandchildren: Anthony (TJ) Jackson ,Montavious (TAE) Jackson, Kennedy-Ryan Jackson, Klarke Jackson, Kellee Jackson; great grandson: Kaleb Jackson; God children: Miles and Jordan Ector; Siblings: Sammie (Gwendolyn) Reese, Frances (Robert) Tucker, Mary Ann (Jimmy) Ector, Teresa Barnes (half-sister), Sister-in- laws: Virginia Lee Jackson, Hazel Jackson, and Melissa Banks, Brother-in-laws: Lowinston (Gwendolyn) Jackson, Louis (Jacqueline) Jackson, Willie Frank (Zeffer) Jackson, Allen (Hazel) Jackson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
