With humble respect, Sewell Mortuary in Grantville announces the transition of Michael Bryant on January 8th, 2024.
Mr. Michael Franklin Bryant, Sr., affectionately known as Poppy, passed away on January 8, 2024, at the age of 81 in Newnan, GA. He was born on July 17, 1942, in Hot Springs, AR, to the late George R. Bryant and Elizabeth Bryant-Craig. Michael was a true patriarch and the rock of his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Michael was a man of many talents and interests. He was known for his steadfastness, intelligence, humor, and charm. He had a passion for cooking and was an excellent chef. He had a discerning palate and was also an expert critic of movies from various genres. Michael's love for food and films brought joy to those around him.
In addition to his personal pursuits, Michael dedicated his life to helping others. Alongside his loving wife, Henrietta "Retta" Bryant, he fostered nearly 100 children, providing them with a safe, caring, and stable environment. Michael's generosity and willingness to share extended beyond his immediate family. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Henrietta "Retta" Bryant, and their children: Michael Bryant Jr., Tamara Rohman, and Rodney Bryant. He is also survived by his brother, George R. Bryant, Jr. and his sister, Audrey Warren, as well as 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other cherished family members. Also leaving his best friends Brady Ward and John L. Jeffers. Michael was preceded in death by his brothers, Larkin Bryant, Melvin Bryant, and Raymond Scott.
Mr. Bryant proudly served in the United States Navy. His dedication to his country and his military associations were an integral part of his life. He also worked for and retired from the United States Postal Service.
Michael was a faithful member of Newnan Chapel United Methodist Church (UMC) for many years. He actively participated in the church's Gospel Choir & Male Chorus, sharing his love for singing with the congregation. Michael also volunteered his time in various departments of the church, always ready to lend a helping hand.
A memorial service to celebrate Michael's life will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 11:00 am at Newnan Chapel United Methodist Church, located at 72 Robinson St., Newnan, GA 30263. Pastor Pallard will preside over the service, with Pastor Terri Lemons delivering the eulogy.
Another service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 11:00 am at Bethany Congregational Church, located at 556 N Hope Ave, Santa Barbara, CA 93110. Pastor Chuck Burwell will officiate the service. Following the service, there will be a reception and gathering at the beach to celebrate Poppy's life.
In memory of Michael, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Newnan Chapel United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
Michael's legacy of love, generosity, and dedication will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will forever be remembered as a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
