Obituary

With humble respect, Sewell Mortuary in Grantville announces the transition of Virgil Griggs on April 14th, 2023.

Funeral Service will be held April 22, 2023, at 1 PM at Springfield Baptist Church Greenville GA.

Virgil M. Griggs Sr. was born on October 14, 1984 at Goulds Clinic in Goulds, Florida to his mother, Edythe M. Edwards and his father, Bennie Griggs Jr. He was truly loved by his father, who depended on him throughout his life.

At the age of 3, he moved to LaGrange, Ga and attended Yvette's Little World Daycare in LaGrange, Ga. He later moved to Greenville, Ga where he attended elementary, middle, and high school. He attended Springfield Baptist Church where he was baptized at an early age.

Growing up Mike was active in sports and activities, such as basketball. He loved being with his brother, David and his friends. After moving to Greenville he gained a lot of friends, who became his family forever.

Mike was blessed with a beautiful baby boy, Virgil Micheal Griggs Jr. with Porsha Blackmon on January 6, 2005. This was one of the happiest times of his life. Big Mike and Lil Mike were best friends. He gained a daughter, Myah, through his marriage to Meka. His greatest joy was being a loving father.

Mike worked as a pipe-liner for 15 years. He joined Local 1652 in Miami, Florida, where he started his journey of being a pipe fitter. He loved working on the pipeline because he could travel and meet new people. He worked in many different states loved learning how to operate different machinery. He worked and traveled as a pipe-liner with his step-father, LT, until his life ended.

He had many friends who he treated as family. He never met a stranger and loved to smile and reminisce about the good times. He loved having fun and enjoying life. He had many hobbies that he liked to do, his main hobby was playing lotto. If you knew Mike, you knew he always played his numbers, which consist of his family and friend's birthday, tag numbers or house addresses.

Mike gained his wings on Friday, April 14th in Hampton, Ga. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Ruby Murphy and Mary Griggs; grandfathers, Joseph Murphy and Bennie Griggs Sr.; sisters, Anishkia Laquita Slayton and Roslind Griggs; uncle, John Murphy; cousins, Issac Horn and Travis Jenkins Jr.

He leaves behind his son, Virgil M. Griggs Jr., his mother, Edythe Murphy (LT); his father, Bennie Griggs Jr. (Penny); siblings, David Collier (Rae), Benny Griggs III, Caroline Griggs, Daphane Blake, Kennissa Griggs, Linda Griggs, Eboni Griggs, Alexis Griggs, Marcus Linder, Daphane Blake, Rodney Parham, Devin Terrye Boone (Shucarma), Iraelle Edwards, Taquana Edwards, Octavious Johnson, JaMurrell Tucher, LaPorsha Gates; aunts, Patricia Bray (Robert), Jackie Murphy, Jeryl (Denise) Murphy, Lydia Murphy, Alicia; uncles, Lamar Griggs, Nathaniel Griggs (Wonda), Joseph Murphy (Darlene); cousins, Shummarah Murphy, Luther Murphy (Regina), Kamila Murphy, Jerge Wells, Joey Wells (Ouaniqua), Jerry Wells, Jeryl Wells, LyDona Lewis and Ashley Prebianca; Mentor, councelor & ear, Porsha Blakmon; best friends Micheal Berry, Dranmond Reeds, Keoni Hollins, Octavious (Tibe) Murphy, Kaynee Kennedy; Kelvin Alford, Marcus Wallace; family friends, Rita, Shell, Kevin, Kentrell, Amanda, Nisha, Ocie (office); special friends Halen McFadden Sr. (Jenelle), Zykeria Gunn, Kaynee Kennedy; a host of nieces, nephews and close friends that will deeply miss him.
